JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS - From the Head of Junior School
Communication Date : Friday 15 July, 2022
Upcoming information for Term 3, Week 2
This term is already shaping up to be great! We have had a wonderful time creating awareness and understanding of Indigenous perspectives this week with our NAIDOC activities and lessons happening in and out of classrooms. We thank our Secondary students who have come over to run activities for our younger students and share their knowledge this week.
We have also introduced some big yellow boxes around the Junior School, this is to give our students more opportunity to 'create and make' during play times, ensuring imagination, creativity and curiosity are nurtured each day. If you would like to know more about what is in our yellow boxes, check in with your child and see what they have discovered in there this week.
We continue to look forward to our Arts Week starting on Monday! On Friday we will celebrate some of our student work and creative achievements with a dress up day, some performances and community painting. For more details check out the information below.
Thank you to each of our parents for a fabulous start to the term as you got back into the swing of our daily routines and for the kind words of support and appreciation as we returned to school this week.

As part of whole college Create@Faith Arts Week commencing on Monday, there are a couple of specific events happening on our Junior Campus:
- Move it Monday - this will be fun filled activities during break times that allow our students to explore how to move in different ways with music as the motivator.
- Hall of Fame Friday - this involves an Art display of students work from various JS year levels. You will be able to take part in an 'Art Walk' around the school to discover the many different pieces of work students have created throughout Semester 1. There will also be a performance by some our percussion students in Cafe Flourish, a photo booth to record some fabulous dress up moments and painting in Koala Gums to allow students to explore their creative side at lunch time. There will also be a free sausage sizzle for students at lunch time on this day!

YEAR 2 HOMEWORK
This semester, homework will be based on our SSP sounds each week, rather than duck words (Duck words will primarily be learnt in class). This change is in response to student learning needs.
The process each week will entail:
These instructions can also be found in front of your child’s scrapbook.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. We appreciate your support in this.

This semester, homework will be based on our SSP sounds each week, rather than duck words (Duck words will primarily be learnt in class). This change is in response to student learning needs.
The process each week will entail:
- Each week the children will continue to learn six words.
- These words need to be written and code mapped each night. Please use the familiar code mapping strategy to help your child ‘sound out’ the word (rather than sounding out each individual letter).
These instructions can also be found in front of your child’s scrapbook.
- We encourage your child to complete one of the spelling activities on the grid, (glued into their scrapbook) 4 times a week. These activities can be written on one page in their books.
- Weekly words will be assessed each Friday in class and completed in the back of their homework scrapbooks.
- Words will be based on our weekly sound.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. We appreciate your support in this.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB
Issue 5 Book Club catalogues have been sent home with students this week. Orders will close on Friday, 22 July 2022.
To place an order and make payment please use – LOOP – Linked Online Ordering and Payment available on www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP or download the LOOP Apple or Android app. Please note there are no cash orders. Please do not send any orders to school. Each order helps earn free books and teaching materials for our library and classrooms, however there is never any obligation to order.
Whilst the majority of book titles in the Scholastic catalogues help our students foster their love of reading and are just fantastic reads, at times the content of some books can be misaligned with our school or our own family values. When ordering, if you are unsure that the content would be appropriate, take a moment to check out a bit more about that particular title before ordering. Focus on the Family offer a great website that can be of assistance called Plugged In (https://www.pluggedin.com/) that offers reviews and content advisory warnings to help keep our kids safe. Common sense media is another website that can be a great resource to help parents find out what they need to know about the book your child is wanting to read also (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews).

EARLY DEPARTURES
A reminder to parents that if you phone the office after 2:30pm to collect your child early, you will be asked to wait until 3:00pm unless it is an emergency. This is to ensure that your child does not miss out on valuable learning time - departing 10 minutes early here and there quickly adds up to hours of missed learning across the course the term and disrupts not just your child but the rest of the class as they leave the room. We thank you for your understanding and support with this.
